What Is a Breast Lift?

Factors such as ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations can cause the breasts to sag and lose volume. While exercise and healthy living may delay these changes, surgery is often required for a definitive solution.Massage and creams do not reverse sagging. Breast lift surgery restores the breasts to a firmer, more youthful position. If volume is insufficient, a lift can be combined with augmentation using implants.

The procedure is relatively comfortable and low in pain. It offers effective and long-lasting results, giving the breasts a firmer, upright, and aesthetically pleasing shape.

Who Can Receive Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery corrects sagging. The extent of sagging influences the surgical approach:

  • Mild sagging can often be corrected with minimal scarring.

  • Moderate to severe sagging, particularly below the natural breast line, requires more extensive incisions.

  • Stretch marks within the treatment area may also be removed.

  • If lifting alone is inadequate, the procedure can be combined with augmentation or reduction.

  • A lifted appearance can also be achieved solely through this surgery, depending on the case.

Breast lifts are typically performed on older patients, although there is no upper age limit. The procedure is generally not recommended for those under 18. Since certain health conditions may prevent the operation from being carried out, it is important not to withhold information about previous surgeries or illnesses during your consultation with your doctor.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

Breast lift surgery is a procedure that can be planned in different ways, depending on the degree of sagging. If the sagging is mild or if the nipples have descended below the inframammary fold to varying degrees, the surgical plan is made by assessing these variables. In cases of first-stage sagging, an incision is made around the dark-coloured area surrounding the nipple. The excess and sagging skin is then removed. In the second stage, an incision is made around the dark area of the breast or vertically from the nipple downwards, through which the excess skin is removed. In the third stage, the incision size increases. The incision size is approximately 5 centimetres from the nipple down to the breast crease, or an inverted T-shaped incision starting from the nipple may be used. The excess skin is then excised through these incisions.

General anaesthesia is used, and the patient usually stays in hospital for at least one night. A drain may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation and is typically removed the next day.

Risks and Complications of a Breast Lift

Swelling and bruising are common and generally subside within one to two weeks. Mild discomfort may be felt, particularly if implants are placed during the same procedure. Arm movements may feel restricted initially but are manageable.

A drain may be used post-operatively to prevent bleeding and fluid build-up. Scar healing varies between individuals. To support healing, it is important to take prescribed medications, follow a healthy diet, and avoid smoking.

Heavy activity should be avoided in the first few weeks to protect the surgical site.

Your doctor will take the necessary precautions for all potential risks associated with a breast lift procedure. During the recovery period, it is crucial that the patient follows these guidelines in collaboration with her doctor.

Breast Lift Recovery and Longevity

Typically, an overnight stay in the hospital is sufficient following a breast lift procedure. The treated area should remain dry for at least two days post-operation. Dressings are changed during the first follow-up appointment, usually within the first week. Wearing a medical or sports bra is advised for a period of three to six weeks. Your doctor will provide prescriptions for pain relief, antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection, and scar treatment. These medications should be taken consistently as directed. Most patients are able to return to work within five days. While significant pain is uncommon, those who have undergone the procedure with a breast implant may experience discomfort during arm movements. This sensation is generally temporary. Bruising and swelling may occur but typically subside within a few weeks. Patients are advised to avoid intense physical activity or heavy sports for one month. The visibility of scarring will depend on skin type and lifestyle, with habits like smoking adversely affecting the healing process.

Although the results of a breast lift are permanent, significant weight fluctuations and pregnancy can alter the appearance of the breasts. Therefore, it is generally recommended to undergo the procedure after completing pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Things to Consider

Prior to the breast lift procedure, your doctor will request a breast ultrasound. Smoking must be discontinued at least one week before surgery. It is important to avoid foods and medications that have a blood-thinning effect. Your doctor should be fully informed of any existing health conditions, current medications, and medical history. Post-operatively, the treated area should be kept dry for two days. Dressings and bandages must remain clean and dry. A medical or sports bra should be worn consistently for a minimum of three to six weeks. Intense physical activity should be avoided for one month. All prescribed medications should be taken as instructed.
