Face Filling

What is Facial Filling?

Facial filling involves restoring volume to targeted areas of the face, improving youthfulness and reducing signs of ageing. Unlike Botox, which addresses wrinkles by relaxing muscles, fillers plump up hollow or sagging areas using either dermal fillers or the patient’s own fat.

The doctor will assess the patient’s skin and mark injection sites before thoroughly cleansing the area. Fine cannulas are then used to inject the filler precisely and safely. This technique reduces the risk of damaging blood vessels and minimises discomfort, swelling, and bruising.

The procedure typically takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on how many areas are treated. Patients can return to their daily activities immediately afterward. Cold compresses may be applied to reduce swelling or tenderness.

Who Can Receive Facial Filling?

Facial fillers are suitable for individuals seeking a more youthful and balanced appearance. Common treatment areas include smile lines, vertical lip lines, sunken cheeks, under-eye hollows, and acne or chickenpox scars. They are also used to refresh the forehead and eye area.

Before treatment, the doctor will assess the patient’s medical history and conduct a skin test. A small amount of filler is injected into the forearm and monitored for about a month to ensure there is no allergic reaction.

What are the Substances Used in Facial Filling?

Facial fillers offer noticeable rejuvenation at a fraction of the cost of surgical procedures. Most sessions are completed in under 30 minutes. They restore volume to the cheeks, chin, and jawline, leaving a more youthful contour.

Hyaluronic acid is the most commonly used substance in fillers. While generally safe, it may occasionally cause redness, swelling, or small lumps beneath the skin. The effects of hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to two years, and some studies suggest repeated treatments may boost natural collagen production.

Facial Filler Risks and Complications

Although the procedure is relatively safe, there are still risks. These may include infection, bruising, bleeding, or allergic reactions. It is important to stop alcohol and blood-thinning medications (including aspirin and vitamin E) before treatment.

The area should be monitored for redness, swelling, or pain. If these occur, antibiotics or medical intervention may be necessary.

Healing and Longevity of Facial Fillers

There is typically no recovery period required. Mild bruising or tenderness may occur but usually resolves quickly—often within an hour. Occasional swelling can occur but typically subsides within a week.

The effects of temporary fillers can last up to a year or more, depending on the product used. Permanent fillers are available, but temporary options are preferred due to their reversible nature. Over time, temporary fillers naturally dissolve within one to two years.

Things to Consider

  • Filler injections can trigger cold sores.
  • Key Considerations for Facial Fillers
  • Each syringe of facial filler may cost several hundred dollars. The price varies depending on the type of filler used. It is important to consult with your doctor in advance regarding the number of syringes required and how frequently the procedure may need to be repeated.
  • Generally, facial fillers are suitable for most individuals without issue. However, if you are taking aspirin, vitamin E, or similar medications, you may experience some bruising during the recovery period.
  • Do not base your decision solely on price. If a treatment is being offered at significantly lower rates than standard prices, it may indicate compromised quality of the filler used.
  • All facial filler procedures must be carried out in a sterile medical environment using properly sanitised instruments. Procedures performed in locations such as private homes, hotels, or spas—regardless of who performs them—are considered unsafe.
  • To protect the filler and avoid pigmentation issues following the injection, it is advised to avoid direct sun exposure for a period after the procedure.
