What is Eyelid Aesthetics?

Often referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid aesthetics is a cosmetic procedure that corrects sagging, drooping, and wrinkles in the eyelids, resulting in a fresher, more youthful appearance. It can be applied to both upper and lower eyelids. Depending on the case, the operation is performed under local or general anaesthesia and usually takes between one to three hours.

The procedure involves removing excess fat, muscle, and skin from the eyelid area, restoring definition and firmness to the eyes.

Who Can Receive Eyelid Aesthetics?

This procedure is suitable for individuals over the age of 18. There is no strict upper age limit, provided the patient is in good health and suitable for surgery based on preliminary tests.

Eyelid aesthetics and especially the so-called “almond eye” look, is particularly popular among women aged 20–30, though younger men in the same age group also seek this treatment.

How is Eyelid Aesthetics Performed?

Although eyelid aesthetics may vary slightly depending on the patient’s individual needs, it is generally performed under local anaesthesia, with general anaesthesia used when necessary. Regardless of the method, the patient feels no pain during the operation.

In most cases, both the upper and lower eyelids are treated in a single session for more comprehensive results. The procedure begins with an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid, through which excess fat, muscle tissue, and skin are removed. Specialised sutures are used to minimise scarring. Once the upper eyelid has been addressed, the same process is repeated on the lower eyelid via an incision made just beneath the lash line.

The procedure typically lasts between one and three hours, after which the patient is discharged the same day. The eyelids are bandaged in a way that does not obstruct vision.

Things to Consider After Eyelid Aesthetics

Despite being a small area, the eyelid is a highly delicate region due to the proximity of the eyes, making the procedure one that requires significant expertise. Important considerations include:

  • Follow all pre- and post-operative instructions given by your surgeon to ensure successful and lasting results.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes during the first week after surgery.
  • After stitch removal, treat the area gently.
  • For 10 days post-op, avoid applying make-up to the area and protect it from direct sunlight.
  • Do not use contact lenses during the first week.

Advantages of Eyelid Aesthetics

The benefits of eyelid surgery include both general aesthetic improvements and specific enhancements related to the eye area:

  • Sagging and wrinkles caused by age or genetics are effectively eliminated.
  • When combined with other facial procedures, eyelid aesthetics plays a key role in achieving a more youthful overall look.
  • The eyelids appear tighter, creating a more alert and energetic expression.
  • Patients often experience psychological benefits and greater social confidence after surgery.

Recovery Process

Following your surgeon’s recommendations is key to a smooth recovery:

  • Dressings applied at discharge do not interfere with vision and should be changed as instructed.
  • Mild bruising and swelling are normal in the first few days.
  • Stitches are usually removed after one week, and most swelling and bruising subside within that timeframe.
  • Dressings may be removed before the stitches, depending on healing progress.
