What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate stubborn fat deposits in specific areas of the body, especially where fat is resistant to diet and exercise. It is not intended for weight loss, but rather for reshaping areas affected by localised fat accumulation.

Liposuction can be performed using various techniques, with classical and VASER liposuction being the most common today. These methods aim to remove fat tissue with minimal damage while maximising patient comfort and recovery.

Who Can Receive Liposuction?

Liposuction is ideal for individuals struggling with regional fat deposits due to genetics or lifestyle. To ensure optimal and lasting results, patients must adhere to post-operative care and lifestyle recommendations provided by their surgeon.

In some cases, fat extracted via liposuction can be purified and used in fat transfer procedures to enhance volume in other areas of the body, such as the face or hips.

How is Liposuction Performed?

The procedure begins with a detailed analysis of the patient’s problem areas. If needed, liposuction may be combined with other surgical procedures. The amount of fat to be removed from each area is carefully planned.

Liposuction is typically performed under local or general anaesthesia and takes around two hours. A fluid or ultrasonic wave is used to break down fat cells. Small incisions are made, through which a special vacuum device is used to gently remove the dislodged fat.

If desired, the removed fat can be injected into other parts of the body, which may extend the length of the procedure.

Things to Consider

Liposuction requires meticulous execution and thorough preparation:

  • Strictly follow your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions.
  • Avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and smoking before surgery.
  • Follow the prescribed post-operative diet plan carefully.
  • Most patients can resume social activities within 5 to 7 days.
  • Due to incisions, maintain excellent hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
