What is a Mommy Makeover?
Maternity aesthetics, commonly referred to as a “Mommy Makeover,” is a combination of procedures designed to reverse the physical changes that occur in a woman’s body after childbirth. Although every woman’s experience is unique, common concerns include sagging in the abdominal region, loss of volume and shape in the breasts, and enlargement of the hips.
Contrary to the assumption that women simply accept these changes as part of motherhood, many struggle with the impact these physical changes have on their emotional well-being, relationships, work life, and even their sex life. At a time when women are expected to stay motivated while adjusting to new routines and responsibilities, body image concerns can become a significant burden.
A “Mommy Makeover” offers women the opportunity to regain their pre-pregnancy figure. Since each case is different, the procedures involved and the recovery time will vary depending on the individual. Typically, a Mommy Makeover may include a tummy tuck, breast reshaping, and liposuction. The surgery usually takes between three and five hours, and patients are discharged within one to two days.
How Is a Mommy Makeover Performed?
Hormonal changes during pregnancy primarily affect the abdomen and breasts. As the baby grows, the abdominal wall is pushed outward, often resulting in lasting damage. The abdominal muscles and connective tissues stretch and loosen, leading to a bulging stomach and loose skin.
If the issue is limited to bulging, it may be addressed with an endoscopic procedure that leaves no visible scars. For more serious concerns, a tummy tuck is performed to remove excess skin and restore firmness. During and after pregnancy, depending on age and skin elasticity, the breasts may lose volume and begin to sag.
If reshaping is all that is required, the existing breast tissue is preserved, and only the shape is corrected by removing excess skin. If there is too much tissue, breast reduction may be performed. If there is insufficient volume, a silicone implant is placed during the lift to restore fullness.
Fat deposits that develop during pregnancy, particularly around the hips and inner thighs, often do not respond to diet and exercise. In such cases, liposuction is the most effective method for restoring the body’s natural shape.
Who Can Receive a Mommy Makeover?
Maternity aesthetics is ideal for women who have experienced physical changes due to pregnancy and want to return to their pre-pregnancy appearance. It is especially suitable for those who have given birth more than once, as stubborn fat and skin laxity become more pronounced and resistant to diet and exercise.
However, the procedure is not performed immediately after childbirth. Women must have completed breastfeeding, and in some cases, six months should have passed since weaning.
Mommy Makeover procedures are generally recommended for women who do not plan to become pregnant again. That said, if performed by experienced surgeons using the correct techniques, there is no harm if the woman later becomes pregnant, as the milk ducts beneath the nipple are not affected. While mild sagging may occur again in the breasts or abdomen after a subsequent pregnancy, it is unlikely that the same degree of deformation will return.
Risks and Complications after a Mommy Makeover
The main aim of a Mommy Makeover is to restore the natural body structure a woman had before pregnancy. Each woman’s case is assessed individually based on her body type and medical history. While some patients may only need a tummy tuck, others may undergo additional procedures such as liposuction or breast surgery.
Decisions should always be made in consultation with a qualified surgeon, rather than based solely on personal preference. Timing is also crucial. The mother should have completed breastfeeding, the breasts should no longer be engorged, the uterus should have returned to its pre-pregnancy size, and the body should have stabilised.
Failing to wait for the appropriate time may result in incomplete results and short-lived improvements. Additionally, it is important for women to consider whether they plan to have more children. While future pregnancies will not undo the surgery entirely, some new sagging or stretch marks may occur depending on individual body structure.
The most critical point is that breast procedures should not damage the milk ducts — something experienced surgeons are careful to avoid.
Conditions to Be Considered Before and After a Mommy Makeover
While cosmetic procedures are now widely performed and considered relatively straightforward, the Mommy Makeover requires special attention due to its personalised nature. The following points should be taken into account:
The mother must have completed breastfeeding and waited the recommended amount of time before undergoing surgery.
A full discussion with the doctor should be held, especially if the patient has previously had surgery or multiple pregnancies, as these factors can affect the approach.
Since the procedures may vary from one woman to another, it is essential to have open communication with the surgeon and to trust their expertise, as they will consider the overall body balance rather than isolated regions.
Depending on the type of surgery, the patient may return home the same day or within two days. However, it generally takes one week to return to light duties and two weeks to resume normal daily activities.
The mother should be aware of these timelines and prepare accordingly.
To ensure optimal results and maintain them, the patient should wear a compression garment and supportive bra for up to three weeks.
Working with a dietician to establish a healthy routine after surgery can help preserve the benefits achieved through the operation.
